Staying Healthy
I am a voice actor. I do voice overs. I am self employed! But I also like to make videos on Youtube. This blog is mostly about my voice over business, but it also has a LOT to do with my videos as well.
Well, it’s been a little over a week that I haven’t went to work at my old “day” job. That means it’s been a little over a week that I HAVEN’T walked between 7 – 8 miles in one day! That’s right, when I was working my cleaning job I figured out that I was walking between 7 – 8 miles (sometimes up to 9 miles) everyday!! (well, 5 days a week anyway)
Thanks right, I may NOT have liked my cleaning job but it sure did keep me healthy! Between Dec. of 2009 and May of 2011 I lost about 25 lbs doing that job. I ate just about whatever I wanted and I couldn’t keep weight on! I hovered about 200 lbs for a very long time. And I loved it!
But, now that I’m doing voice overs full time, now that I’m in front of a computer for most of the day again, now that I’m NOT exercising , I’ve gained over 10 lbs since I’m not working that other job. (that was LAST WEEK!) Yet…as of this morning I’m 211 lbs! (I’m sure the chocolate chip cookie my wife made last night doesn’t help matters none)
The bad this is, right now, I’m basically still eating whatever I want, but….I’m just not moving! I need to exercise! If I continue down this same path, I’ll gain a LOT of weight very quickly.
Here’s the thing…my voice IS my job! I make a living doing my voice overs! So that means I have to take care of my voice AND my body! After all, if I’m sick, I can’t work! (and I might lose out on a VO job if I’m sick) Not only that, but my VOICE is a business! If I can’t walk up a set of stairs because I’m too fat, how can I meet a new client who wants my voice?
Yes…my VOICE is my money maker. But it’s my BODY that gets me from place to place so my VOICE can do its job.
If you do voice overs, you have to take care of your BODY too! Heck, you really should take care of yourself no matter what kind of job you do.
I realize now is that no matter what you do in life, you have to take care of yourself.
I’ve been off my old “day” job for a week now. I love doing voice overs full time and being at home all the time now. But I’m still not used to NOT being on a set schedule. (I used to get up at 5:30am, be at work at 7am, be home by 2pm…you get the idea) I’m going to fix this next week!
I’m going to make a plan to run / walk / workout (or something) for at least an hour Mon – Fri. I might not get up to 7 or 8 miles like I used to, but at least it will be something.
If you’re self-employed, make sure and take care of the parts that make money for you. More importantly, take care of your whole body too!
